The Danger of the Potted Plant
Family, there is a massive difference between a tree that is planted in the ground and a plant that is sitting in a cheap, plastic pot. A potted plant is mobile. It’s convenient. If the sun gets too hot, you can move it. If you don't like the scenery, you pick it up and carry it somewhere else.
But a potted plant will never grow into a majestic Cedar of Lebanon. Its roots are trapped by its own desire for mobility.
Too many of us are living our faith like potted plants. We are spiritual nomads. The moment a church service doesn’t feed our emotions, the moment a leader offends us, or the moment things get a little too quiet, we pick up our pot and move to the next place. We spend our lives moving, and then we wonder why we are spiritually unstable, easily knocked over by the winds of life."
The Meaning of 'Planted'
"But look at what God’s Word says in Psalm 92:13: 'Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.'
In the original Hebrew, that word 'planted' actually means 'transplanted.' It implies a deliberate, permanent move. A tree doesn't transplant itself. A master gardener has to pick it up out of the wild wilderness, place it into a specific plot of dirt, and seal it in.
Notice the promise: The Bible does not say those who visit the house of the Lord will flourish. It doesn’t say those who hop from courtyard to courtyard will flourish. It says those who are planted will flourish. You cannot experience the flourishing life of God if you refuse to let your roots get dirty in a local community."
Honour the Small and Insignificant Soil
"I know what some of you are thinking: 'But my church is so small. My community feels insignificant. We don't have the big lights, the massive crowds, or the perfect programs.'
Listen to me: A tree doesn't grow because the dirt is famous. A tree grows because the dirt is consistent.
It doesn't matter how small, how hidden, or how simple your local community of faith is. If God has placed you there, that is your oasis. Your growth isn't dependent on the size of the building; it’s dependent on the depth of your roots. When you plant yourself in a small place, your roots have to go deeper to find the water. It builds a strength in you that massive, comfortable places never could."
Make the Choice to Stay
"Stop looking for the perfect soil, and start being faithful in the soil you have. Find your place. Find your people. Connect to a local community of faith, lock arms with them, and say, 'I am digging my roots in right here.'
Through the good seasons and the dry seasons, through the offenses and the victories—stay planted. Because when you are anchored in the House of God, the Bible promises that even when you grow old, you will still bear fruit. You will remain fresh, you will remain flourishing, and you will outlast every storm of life. Stop wandering, family. It’s time to get planted."
